Why become a volunteer Event Health Officer?

Taking the step to volunteer with our Event Health Services team opens up an array of opportunities for different experiences and interaction with St John and your community. As a volunteer with us, you will attend a wide variety of community events and perform an essential role in safeguarding the health of the public.

As a volunteer, you are given the training, support and confidence to feel ready in your role to help the local community.

  • Have time to volunteer at events with an expectation of at least 5 hours per month, and attend fortnightly training and divisional nights?

What your role involves

  • Ensure first aid skills are maintained by completing the required annual continuing education programme
  • Respect St John WA values
  • Represent St John as a professional and positive organisation at all times
  • Work effectively with other team members and other service personnel at all times
  • Provide professional and appropriate first aid care as required in accordance with St John policies and guidelines
  • Maintain the safety and wellbeing of self and others
  • Clear expectation to volunteer for at least a minimum of 5 hours per month
  • Expected to a minimum of 1 meeting per month at your home division each year
  • Ongoing Continuous Education Programme (CEP) completed monthly at your division
  • Assist in any other area as requested by your Divisional or Operational Manager

  • Step 2 - If your application is successful, you will be offered a volunteer position with Event Health Services and will be contacted for next steps.
    • This application will take about 20 minutes to complete. If you cannot complete the application right now, you can click 'Save Progress' to save your work and come back at any time within the next 14 days.
    • You will need to upload a copy of your driver’s license so have a digital copy ready (you can take a photo of it with your smartphone).
    • You will also need an up-to-date National Police Clearance. There’s a link on the application form to organise this—remember you can save your application form at any stage and come back to it.
    • We also require you to complete a medical questionnaire as part of the application. All these steps are there to ensure your safety and the safety of the people you’re helping.

The Onboarding Process

  • Complete the St John WA Volunteer Online Induction
  • Attend Welcome Induction
  • Attend Division Orientation
  • Complete Provide First Aid course or submit evidence of current certification
  • Successfully complete clinical training over 6 days with variation of training days available
  • Ongoing Continuous Education Programme (CEP) completed annually at your division
  • Complete minimum 5 buddy shifts, treating 5 patients as part of the Milestones program
  • Attend a minimum of 1 meeting per month at your home division each year
  • Volunteer for at least 5 hours per month as a minimum

 

Skills you will develop

Being an Event Health Officer will develop your communication and clinical first aid skills, as well as build your confidence by allowing you to engage with a wide variety of people by bringing lifesaving skills to the community.

Being part of a large volunteer team will help you connect with other likeminded volunteers in the Perth area. You will also form part of the St John WA Event Health Services team at thousands of public events annually, making a difference to people’s lives.

This program engages people of all ages, and our volunteers derive a great deal of satisfaction from the sharing of knowledge and bringing lifesaving skills to the people of Perth.

  • All our volunteers are provided with the necessary training to enable them to carry out their role. To continue to operate in your role, you must maintain the competencies required and an appropriate level of fitness as roles are physically demanding.

Required documentation

To become a volunteer with St John Ambulance Western Australia, you will be asked to complete an online application, including a medical questionnaire and the following:

  • National Police Clearance (Valid within the past 6 months)
  • Current Photo ID (Driver’s Licence, Passport or WA Photo/Proof of Age Card)
Ongoing training

All our volunteers are provided with the necessary training to enable them to carry out their role. To continue to operate in your role, you must maintain the competencies required and an appropriate level of fitness as roles are physically demanding.

Confidentiality

All information concerning our volunteers is treated as strictly confidential at all times.

Expenses

Your volunteering for St John Ambulance should not cost you anything. We will reimburse all legitimate out of pocket expenses incurred during your time volunteering with us. You should talk to your supervisor to confirm what expenses you can claim.

St John places a very high value on the health and wellbeing of their volunteers and provides an extensive support network through its confidential Wellbeing and Support program, accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
